Time Magazine ran a particularly compelling article on the subject of Heightism – but not recently. In fact, the article ran October 4, 1971 – nearly 30 years ago.
Heightism, as you know, is a particularly damaging form of prejudice inflicted on persons that are considered to be “short†or even “not tall enough.†The prejudice is most damaging for two reasons: one, because it affects every aspect of the life of the person who is being slighted and two, because heightism is not even thought to be a prejudice at all. Sometimes we spend so much time learning how to grow taller in our pursuits to increase our height that the underlying, core reasons why we have the goal to increase our height can be shuffled around in the mix.
Height – in this day and age – is at a premium. It is true, that in a “perfect world†a person’s height would have absolutely no impact on their social, romantic, or professional standing in any way, shape, or form – just as their race, nationality, or gender would. [click to continue…]
